Lily's birth, our third beautiful baby.
I'd told my mom not to come too early, thinking one day early would be enough time, after being overdue with both Astra and Willem. But then baby started feeling lower... I kept getting pains, starting and stopping as I scurried to try to piece together childcare until my mom arrived. Everyone said third babies come fast. I worried that I'd have no warning when the baby suddenly came!
When my mom finally arrived, my house was clean, instructions were on the fridge and I went to bed feeling relieved. Only an hour and a half later, I woke knowing it was time to go the hospital. Three and a half hours later, our 8 pound baby girl was born!
Lily had a lot of fluid remaining in her lungs so they suctioned her, and kept watching her, and almost took her away to the nursery, but they handed her back to me. My instinct was to pat her back, to sit her up, to do something. But they told me to just lay her on my chest and breathe normally.
The power of that moment still strikes me. All my daughter needed me to do, was to relax, and be calm and she would learn how to breathe from me. I stopped all my worry and took deep breaths whispering, "This is how you breathe."
She coughed, and soon she breathed well.
